DRUNKEN by Peter de Cupere

In the performance ’Drunken’ one sees the artist as a loner sitting at a table. After drinking the red wine, he opens two drawers of the table. The latter are positioned opposite one another and as such create the shape of a ‘cross’ together with the table. By opening the drawers one sees that a part of the surface of the table also opens up and a space filled with red wine becomes visible. He fills his glass again from this sea of red wine, drinks and crawls into the table, laying himself down in the wine. Waiting on a state of complete drunkenness, not just orally, but physically sucking up the red alcohol into his body. Afterwards he crawls back out of the table and lets his behaviour and stature be determined by the influence of his being drunk. The artist finishes back at the table where he started.
With this, the artist wants to research into behavioural changes. The latter can vary from very cheerful to melancholy or plain aggressiveness. Alcohol subdues the nerve cells which put a brake on the behaviour. It brings the person in a happy state of mind, but it can also have a negative effect on others. The behaviour that the artist shows due to his drunkenness give waddling, stumbling dimensions which coincide with falling and tumbling. Some might see this as neurological symptoms or show references to mentally and/or physically reactions. A link to some extreme psychiatric cases is not farfetched if one should not know that the cause is alcohol.

Furthermore questioning religion: ‘the table in the symbol of the cross’. The artist comes down stumbling from the cross, infatuated by the alcohol of the red wine. Whether the artist wants to question religion, he leaves it up to the imaginary perception of the spectator. But before going outside, take another deep breath and let the scent of alcohol and red wine, lead you your own way
